WorkAid
Worthing to New York City!

It has been a tough and relentless five years for Owen Palfrey as he has consistently handed out his CV to employers from Worthing to Brighton absolutely determined to achieve paid employment.  During that time, Owen has additionally been working on a voluntary basis for Save the Children in Worthing, gaining a variety of work skills, and where he was delighted to meet Princess Anne on her visit in June 2011.

Owen never gave up and, more recently, WorkAid started to work alongside him, helping Owen to gain two voluntary jobs with Guild Care and also a paid position with the Powerful Trainers team at the Aldingbourne Trust.  His work with Powerful Trainers has helped Owen not only to learn about himself, but also to teach people about his condition of Asperger’s.

When WorkAid became aware of a job advertisement in Poundland, Owen was recommended to follow up on this opportunity.  Following a short interview with the Manager, Harvey Finch, Owen was initially offered twelve hours work per week, and subsequently this was increased to sixteen hours.  Owen was then found to be so flexible and capable in his work that he has routinely been offered additional hours as needed.  Owen was understandably incredibly excited to obtain this job and remains that way particularly because, together with a few friends, he is now able to save up to go to New York City, Owen’s dream holiday!

Poundland Manager, Harvey Finch, has told WorkAid that Owen was employed based on his well mannered, hard working and positive work attitude.  He is also stated to be an excellent time keeper, reliable and flexible.  WorkAid has recently been on a visit to Poundland to see Owen at work and immediately witnessed his excellent friendly approach to customers, his positive mental attitude and his organisational skills in team working, together with his great sense of humour.

It is very clear that Owen’s determination has paid off and it is a real pleasure to see him preparing to enjoy the holiday of a lifetime in New York City, before too long.

This is just one example how WorkAid, can support adults with learning difficulties to find employment and how businesses can access motivated individuals who have a desire, passion and skills to become excellent employees. With the bonus of additional support from WorkAid, it is win-win situation.
